GameGadget – “Go Anywhere – Play Everything”
Posted by Simply The Base | Filed under Coming Soon, Electronics, Video Games
Is this the iPod for retro gamers? Introducing The GameGadget, the latest handheld games console vying for a slice of the mobile games market.
You might look at the GameGadget and think “oh it’s just another gameboy-esque device in an already over subscribed market”, but let me explain why this console might actually have the potential to make some real waves.
Running a version of the Linux operating system, the main idea is to create an open-source games community, where games can be created and sold through a central marketplace. Designed to support 16 & 32 bit games and with an expandable SD Card slot, there is the potential for you to carry around 1,000′s of retro and classic games in your pocket.
The GameGadget is available on launch (30/03/2012) at the price of £74.99. Games will range from £1.49 to £1.99 and packs 10-15 games for just tenner.
As yet it’s hard to say how much of a success it will be, and will rely heavily on how fast the community grows, but it has the potential to really shake up the mobile gaming scene.

Big Gaming Releases Without The Big Price Tag
Posted by Simply The Base | Filed under Offers, Video Games
The end of 2011 has been packed full with top gaming releases, with something for everyone here is our selection of our best deals:
Buy Football Manager 2012 (PC) for only £10.99
I have been a die-hard fan of the Football Manager gaming series since the 2005 edition. Every year I lose hours (sometimes days) of my life playing it and every year I wonder how could they possibly make the game any better? Fortunately this year’s version is no exception. With over 800 new features and a revamped 3D simulator it is more addictive than any game I have ever played.
Buy Uncharted 3 - Drake's Deception (PS3) for only £19.99
Nathan Drake returns for his third outing in Sony’s highly decorated gaming series. Now available to play in 3D, it promises to maintain the high level of quality expected from the series that is so cinematic in style some of the scenes would not look out of place in a top budget Hollywood movie.
Buy The House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut (Move Compatible) (PS3) for only £5.99
Continue 9,8,7… The iconic House of the Dead arcade gaming series is now available to play in your own home. Overkill – Extended Cut features 3D & HD visuals as well as supporting the Playstation move controllers. Now you can have that point and shoot arcade experience in your own living room.
Buy Sonic Generations (Xbox 360) for only £11.99
This is the only game this year that came even close to matching my excitement for Football Manager 2012. Sonic on the Sega Mega Drive was the first game I ever owned and whilst my love for the series has remained strong there is no denying there have been a few rubbish Sonic titles lately. Sonic Generations sees the series return to it’s former glory, combining the old-school side scrolling fun with modern up-to-date 3D graphics.

The Return of the 90′s
Posted by Simply The Base | Filed under Cinema, Coming Soon, Movies, Music, TV, Video Games
This month has seen the announcement for the return of the Bill & Ted Film Series and TV Show Red Dwarf. Keanu Reeves himself broke the Bill & Ted news, confirming that writing of the script was in progress. Red Dwarf has been confirmed to hit TV screens in November, with the majority of the original cast to return. Both enjoyed the majority of their success in the 1990′s and have achieved a cult status associated with the decade. This got myself (and most of the office) reminiscing about all the great and not so great moments and trends from the 90′s, it wasn’t long before we realised that a lot of things from the decade are making a come-back soon or have already within the last few years.
So what else is there to look forward to help continue this 90′s revival….
Games:
- Duke Nukem Forever: “The alien hordes are back and only Duke can save the world, again”. The greatly anticipated and delayed games series returns this year, with outings on the PS3, XBox 360 and PC. Expect outrageous story-lines and over the top weaponry, this will be a hit.
- Mortal Kombat: The Arcade Fighting sensation, released in 1992, returns on PS3 & XBox 360 in what is being billed as ‘a return to the series’ roots’. More brutal than ever, perhaps not every-one’s cup of tea but hard to ignore for any serious gamer.
Music:
- Blur: If one word could sum up the 90′s musically it would be – ‘Britpop’. Along with Oasis, Blur were the undisputed (let the arguments begin again) Kings of the genre. Whilst there is no concrete information it is very strongly rumoured that Blur will release a full studio album this year, the first time all 4 original members have recorded together in over a decade!
- Blink 182: No date for their new album either but some strong words from band members. Tom DeLonge – the record will “absolutely” be out in time for the U.K. tour this summer and that Blink “will not tour if there is no record”. Travis Barker – “I think we’ll turn in our album in June or July, honestly… It’s coming close, to the point where these are completed songs and they’re not going to change.
Film/TV:
- Rock & Chips: Whilst it’s common place for films to get a prequel, it is slightly rarer for TV shows. Rock & Chips began airing last year, it portrays the childhood of one Derek ‘Del-Boy’ Trotter before he became the lovable wheeler-dealer we grew to love in the show Only Fools and Horses. 2 episodes have already aired to much acclaim and a third is due on the 24th April.
- Scream 4: Back in 1996 we were all taught how to survive if you ever wound up in a horror movie. Two sequels closely followed with great box office success. The Trilogy poked fun at the linear and predictable story-lines that many previous slasher films had followed. This weekend sees the U.K. release of the franchise’s 4th film, whether there is still any innovation to been found in the series remains to be seen, but something tells me it will be worth a watch.
So is the 1990′s revival well and truly on? I hope so, bring back Wayne’s World, Will Smith’s rap career and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles too!
Comment below and tell us what you want to see return from this glorious decade.
F1 2011 – Will this be the best season yet?
Posted by Simply The Base | Filed under Sport, Video Games
This Saturday marks the start of the new highly anticipated Formula 1 2011 season, but is all the hype around the new season justified? Well new rules, regulations and suppliers should all help, but with the sport gaining such little (positive) media attention in the off-season we decided to compile our own list of the major changes this season, so you can be up to speed before the lights go green in Australia.
Team & Driver Line up Changes:
- Lotus Renault GP – The unfortunate injuries suffered to Robert Kubica during the Ronde di Andora rally has ruled him out almost definitely for the entire season. The experienced Nick Heidfeld has been drafted in, but I’m sure everybody hopes to see Robert back as soon as possible.
- AT&T Williams – The team has in my view made a big error in dropping Nico Hülkenberg, last season’s rookie was beginning to prove his worth in F1 and deserved a second season. Nico has been replaced by 2010 GP2 Series champion Pastor Maldonado.
- Force India – Vitantonio Liuzzi jumps ship/pushed to Hispania Racing, to be replaced by Rookie Brit Paul di Resta, can he emulate the instant success of Lewis Hamilton, perhaps not straight away, but another British driver is always a welcome addition to the grid.
- Sauber F1 Team – Mexican Sergio Pérez, runner-up in the GP2 Series last season, fills the second driver seat here.
- Hispania Racing- As mentioned, Vitantonio Liuzzi joins along with Narain Karthikeyan (remember him? perhaps not, he had a fairly uninspired stint with Jordan in the 2005 season)
- Virgin Racing – The frankly under-rated Timo Glock is joined by another F1 newbie in the form of Jérôme d’Ambrosio, who had been with the team as their Friday test driver.
Major Rule Changes:
- The return of the 107% qualifying rule. Let’s hope the newer teams have caught up with the pace in the winter development period!
- Bridgestone has ended its long-running tyre supplier deal with the sport, being replaced by Pirelli. Will this make a difference the racing? Possibly yes as rumours suggest tyres may now been designed to degrade quicker on purpose in an effort to mix up the pit strategies.
- F-ducts have been banned but the energy boost system KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) makes a comeback.
- An adjustable rear wing system has been implemented to give drivers an optional speed-boost in certain conditions. The availability of the system will be controlled remotely by the FIA and only allowed under certain conditions. Controversy awaits!
The last 2 seasons will prove hard to beat in terms of excitement and closeness, but a mixture of new rookie drivers and the return of over-taking aids like KERS and the new adjustable rear wings should see the on-track action increase and take pit-lane strategy to another level. I know the team at Base.com are excited for the talking to stop and the engines to start.
Base.com would also like to congratulate Codemasters for winning the Sports category at the GAME BAFTA’s this year with their multi-format F1 2010. A well deserved win for a truly excellent game.
Freebie Friday! Win a copy of Killzone 3 on PS3
Posted by Simply The Base | Filed under Competition, Video Games
We have 1 of 2 copies of the fantastic Killzone 3 on PS3 to give away.
Continuing from Killzone 2, players find Emperor Visari, the viscious dictator of the Helghast, dead at the feet of Sev and Rico. However this war is far from won. In the wake of Visari’s death, Helghan has devolved into a world of political scheming, rapid infighting, and murder. Now, the two most powerful men on Helghan are fighting for complete and utter dominance while Visari’s vision of Helghan is in jeopardy. With limited supplies and no re-enforcements, the ISA must now fight not to win a war, but to survive a lost one.
Not only does the game utilise the Playstation Move hardware to good effect, it also has support for full stereoscopic 3D gameplay.
